The Factory Quarter
This mixed use development at the former Prestolite Factory in West London created a total of 453 homes, a health care facility, café, retail, community spaces and landscaping for shared spaces, play areas and green spaces. GHM worked collaboratively with two other practices on this project. The scheme that received planning approval from the Mayor of London and the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham covered approximately 2.4 hectares, off Larden Road in West London. The design for the site comprised a mix of uses and an array of new build projects and the conversion of industrial buildings. We retained key design aspects of the original factory buildings within the scheme, combining a contemporary mix of brick, render, coloured glazing and timber materials to produce a robust and sustainable new build solution. Reaching current targets of incorporating 10 per cent renewable energy resources, the Prestolite Factory redevelopment is oriented to maximise natural sources of light and heat, the development also integrates wind turbine and communal heating technology.
